Princess Tutu Rant (spoilers for the ending…)

A lot of people complain about the ending to Princess Tutu.

They don’t like that she turned back into a duck at the end.

I think its rather superficial to dislike then ending because you want Duck to remain a girl (likely so that she can be with Fakir).

Sub-textually, the entire point of Duck turning back into a duck was because she didn’t need to be anything other than what she was. It was a subversion of the metaphor of the ugly duckling becoming the swan; duck was fine the way she was; when she tried to be Princess Tutu (or the ‘swan’), she was trying to be something other than what she was. She learned to accept herself for what she was by letting go of Princess Tutu and her normal girl self.

Sure, you could have made the same statement if she just stayed ‘Duck the normal girl’, but it would not have been as poignant as it was when she accepted herself fully.

THANK YOU.  Seriously, I get really pissed off when people hate this ending simply because the couple they wanted didn’t end up together.  As Americans, our media is constantly geared towards happy and satisfying endings, so much so that we EXPECT it—and when it doesn’t work out that way, people consider it BAD.  

There is honestly no other way this anime could have ended.  Period.  It would have gone against everything the show had stood for had Duck remained a girl and lived happily ever after with Fakir.  Life doesn’t have happily ever afters, and most fairy tales (save Disneyfication) don’t either.  

I can just see the Japanese fans rolling their eyes at us thinking “stupid simple minded Americans…”

Oh gosh, there’s too many to name.  Well fanart-wise, anything by amako-chan is great.  She really gets the essence of the characters, both physically and emotionally.  If I could draw, I’d want to draw just like her :)

Music videos, (again too many to name), 1koolkitty always makes me happy with her Disney/Princess Tutu crossovers, so I’d probably say she’s one of my favorites.

Oh, and any fan MUST watch Princess Tutu Abridged by TutuOnAbridger.  They’ve currently abridged through Episode 24 and they are HILARIOUS.  Go check them out.

Have You Read the Manga? If So, What Are Your Thoughts On It?

Before I go into my intense soapbox rant, I would like to point out one thing I did like about the manga, and that was expanding a bit more on Pique’s feelings for Fakir.  In the anime, I always wondered what was going through her mind as she watched Duck and Fakir grow closer in Season 2, and I found it nice to see it get some attention.

Regardless, it is AWFUL.  A complete and utter insult to everything that made the Princess Tutu anime great—because everything that made the anime great WASN’T IN THE MANGA.  The character relationships were reduced to nothing, Drosselmeyer was gone, thus the story within a story element was nil, and the art—oh GAWD the art—I never thought Mytho could look any more feminine, but this mangaka proved me wrong.

The anime was nothing you would expect from a title like Princess Tutu—while the manga was everything you would expect from a title like Princess Tutu.  I felt so disgusted after reading it I had to rewatch the anime to remind myself this show is incredible.  From that day on anytime someone would mention the Princess Tutu manga, I say “Manga? What manga?”
